Governor Gavin Newsom Faces Criticism Over New California Legislation

Bill Would Restrict Sales of Certain Energy Drinks to Minors

Governor Gavin Newsom of California is facing criticism over a new bill that would restrict the sale of certain energy drinks to minors. The bill, AB 2798, was introduced by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) and would prohibit the sale of energy drinks containing more than 100 milligrams of caffeine per 12 ounces to people under the age of 18. The bill is currently in the Assembly Health Committee.

Opponents of the bill argue that it is an overreach of government and that parents should be responsible for monitoring their children's caffeine intake.

Supporters of the bill argue that energy drinks can be harmful to children and that the government has a responsibility to protect public health. They point to studies that have linked energy drink consumption to heart problems, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.

The bill is expected to be voted on by the Assembly Health Committee in the coming weeks. If it passes the committee, it will then move to the full Assembly for a vote. If it passes the Assembly, it will then go to the Senate for consideration.

Newsom has not yet taken a position on the bill, but he is expected to sign it if it reaches his desk.

In a statement, Newsom said that he is "committed to protecting the health and safety of California's children." He said that he will "review the bill closely and make a decision based on the evidence."
