Euro 2024: Germany Thrashes Scotland in Tournament Opener

Hosts Make Ideal Start with Dominant 5-1 Victory

Scotland's Hopes Dented Amidst Heavy Loss

Germany made an emphatic start to their home European Championship campaign on Friday, June 14th, 2024, with a resounding 5-1 victory over Scotland in the opening match of Euro 2024.

Playing at the Allianz Arena in Munich, the hosts wasted no time in stamping their authority on the match. Germany's dominance was evident from the outset, and they took the lead in the 12th minute through a clinical strike from Timo Werner.

Scotland's task became even more daunting when they were reduced to 10 men just before halftime. Grant Hanley was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Leroy Sané, leaving Scotland with a mountain to climb.

Germany took full advantage of their numerical superiority in the second half, scoring four more goals to seal a comfortable victory. Kai Havertz scored twice, while Ilkay Gündogan and Thomas Müller also got on the scoresheet.

Scotland's consolation goal came in the 73rd minute through Lyndon Dykes, but it was merely a consolation as Germany cruised to a resounding victory.

The result leaves Germany in a strong position in Group A, while Scotland's hopes of reaching the knockout phase have suffered a major setback.
